Making mental well-being a priority

Mental health is a silent epidemic in Tanzania, with a significant proportion of the population experiencing mental health problems. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that over 25% of the population in Tanzania suffers from a mental illness, with depression being the most prevalent condition.

Prevention strategies are essential in addressing the factors that contribute to mental health problems. Despite the urgency of the situation, government spending on mental health in Tanzania remains below the recommended US$2 per person, with mental health not included in national health insurance schemes. Investing in mental health prevention can help reduce the prevalence of mental illness in Tanzania and improve the well-being of citizens.
